Finding Books for New Siblings

When you are expecting another child, it can be an amazing event. For an older child, it can be a time of confusion. However, home schooling parents have the resources to find books to help introduce their child to the idea of a new sibling.
If your family is “expecting”, you can turn the book search into a home schooling field trip. Pack up the car and take your children to the local library. For younger kids, make it an opportunity to teach them about the organization of the library. Have them speak to a librarian and get the information on how to find books about having a new brother or sister, then have them get the books and check them out. For older home school children, have them do a catalog search through the library’s computer system to find related books. Make it fun by having a contest to see who can find the most interesting books about becoming an older brother or sister.
Once you have tackled the library, you can move on to other methods that can be incorporated into home schooling. Incorporate the search for books into a lesson on the Internet. Try using a variety of different search engines; that way you will end up with more results. You may be able to locate articles and short books that you can download or even read immediately.
If you are still interested in searching for more books after utilizing the library and Internet, speak with other home schooling families in your area. Not only will they probably have a multitude of suggestions for books to read to your older child, but also they will probably have ideas of how to incorporate that into the home schooling lessons. Other home school children are a great resource to investigate when trying to find something relevant to both family and home schooling.
After finding the books to help your child with the confusion of what’s to come, sit down and enjoy some quality time reading together. Having the advantage of being able to incorporate the reading materials into the home schooling lessons will also help to teach your child about all of the wonderful things that come with being an older sibling. Even though home schooling families are very busy, they always have time to share all of the amazing events that happen over the years.
