Is Homeschooling a Possibility for Our Family?
By Mimi Rothschild
If you’re wondering whether you can homeschool your child, you will be happy to learn, it’s not as difficult as you may think. Many parents fear they cannot do as good a job as a teacher with a college degree. You may be surprised to find that there are many resources available to the homeschooling parent. These resources will provide you with the skills needed to help your child succeed. Whether you decide to use your own curriculum, use online classes, or join a homeschool group, homeschooling may be the best option for you and your homeschooler. If your child attends a traditional school, you will discover much of the time is used instructing children, dealing with behavior issues, and trying to teach to a large group with many different needs.
At home, a one-on-one approach is used. Now you can instruct your child to their individual needs. There is much less wasted time and fewer distractions. Time is used more wisely with homeschoolers, making home school a better learning environment. Spending more time with an individual child on subjects the child needs help with, will provide the best learning experience for the child. It’s like offering the child a private tutor. This individual attention will not only help your child move at a quicker pace, but you can also take the time to teach to their specific needs.
There are many home school groups you can join. By joining with other homeschool parents, you can learn which style of homeschool teaching will be best for you and your child. Ask questions and join in any beginners home school classes. For a small fee you can have an ISP (Independent Study Program) take care of all paperwork necessary for your state’s educational requirements. Often joining an ISP will help ease your concerns as a new home school teacher. ISP’s often offer classes for children and play groups for socialization. You may wish to start out using an ISP but later leave and homeschool on your own.
If you are considering homeschooling your child, then you will need to do some research. You may be surprised at how many children are homeschooled in your city. Join online homeschool group and talk to other homeschooling parents. Ask about curriculum, classes for homeschoolers, and socialization. Often you’ll find specific classes for homeschooled children only. These classes can be subject specific or just for fun, such as karate and painting. Don’t forget to visit your local teacher’s supply store. Look over curriculum and take into consideration your child’s strength’s and weaknesses when choosing curriculum.
Can you homeschool your child? With some research, curriculum and some special time with your child, you can homeschool!
