Information Concerning Education Today & Homeschooling by Mimi Rothschild

What Men Should Know About Nutrition

By Mimi Rothschild

Most young men understand that nutrition is an important aspect of being healthy. Yet, if you are raising young men and homeschooling them, now is the time to educate them on good nutrition. Exercise and nutrition both play a key factor in disease prevention and fighting off infection and your homeschooler can benefit from having healthy eating habits. Many individuals do not know what it takes to eat a healthy diet and do not know just how important it is to their health. The following are things young men should know about their nutrition and such knowledge can be conveyed to them in the homeschool setting.

Caffeine

While there is no scientific proof that caffeine will lead to heart disease, it is important to make sure your homeschooler consumes caffeine in moderation. This means limiting your homeschooler’s daily intake of beverages with caffeine to two or three. The reason for this is that while research has been contradictory, there is reason to believe caffeine can affect the blood sugar levels of your homeschooler.

Fiber

Increasing the fiber in your homeschooler’s diet will help prevent gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, heart disease, and even certain types of cancer. Your homeschooler can get fiber from many sources, including cereals, vegetables, and fruits. The fact is, not many young men actually eat the amount of fiber that is required. By increasing the amount your homeschooler eats, your child will be less constipated and suffer less chances of getting hemorrhoids and diverticulitis.

Alcohol

Alcohol, in any form, is best if drank in moderation. While there may not be fat in alcoholic beverages like beer, there are a lot of calories and very few nutrients. There is research that excessive use of alcohol can lead to liver and kidney problems, as well as other issues, such as gastritis and high blood pressure.

Red Meat

Most young men eat more red meat than women and unfortunately, too much can increase your homeschooler’s chances of getting colorectal cancer. It is best to eat red meat in moderation.

Vitamins

While some shrug their shoulders at the thought of taking vitamins, it is very important for your homeschooler to get their daily requirements. Vitamins are not produced by the body so your homeschooler must get them from the foods that they eat. It is best, however, to take a multi-vitamin that meets all of the requirements of your child’s daily needs.

While most young men would agree that staying on a nutritious diet can be pretty boring, the fact is, a nutritious diet doesn’t have to be. The key is to eat whatever one is having in moderation. There’s certainly nothing wrong with having a small slice of pie for dessert. If your homeschooler eats the whole pie, on the other hand, it’s a different story. When it comes to being healthy, your homeschooler doesn’t have to take protein shakes to enhance their physical abilities. You should just make sure your homeschooler is eating right and make sure they get the vitamins they need.
