Incorporating Faith in Home School

By Mimi Rothschild

Is it possible to add Christian philosophies into your child’s home school curriculum? Absolutely it is. Just because you and your child have decided to trek down the road of home school does not mean that you, as a parent, cannot incorporate Christian philosophies into their home school studies.

There are some people who are already looking down on you for choosing to home school your child. However, you know that what you are doing is best for your child. If you want to incorporate Christian principles into your child’s home school studies, then do so. You, the parent, are the teacher of your child in many ways, and there are many ways that you can integrate your religious beliefs into your child’s home school studies.

Know when it is appropriate to incorporate your beliefs into studies and when to leave them out. There is nothing wrong with taking an alternate approach to your child’s home school studies, but you probably shouldn’t saturate every little piece of information with religion.

If you find material in your child’s home school studies that you find offensive or against your beliefs, you can first look at the subject matter to determine if the information is critical to your child’s education. If it is not, then just skip it. There is nothing wrong with omitting information from your child’s home school studies that you find offensive or against your beliefs. Perhaps it would be pertinent to contact the administrator of the material you are using for home school to talk about the content that you find offensive and discuss an alternate way to incorporate the information.

Remember to teach the other aspects of education to your home school student. Aspects that involve your religious beliefs such as compassion, love and respect are also important when you home school your children. Remember to include outings in your child’s home school that are wholesome and educational.

It is important to incorporate social activities into your child’s home school education. These social activities can involve a number of things that can include aspects of your religious beliefs. A well-rounded home school education includes family beliefs as well as social interactions.

Remember to teach your home school children about God’s love, and how they themselves can learn to love through God’s example. Showing them love, respect and compassion will teach them the important educational aspects that will help them with their home school studies, and stay with them for life.
