Scriptural Reasons for Home Education

by Mimi Rothschild

An institutional educational environment may enable your children to read and write. But its main focus is not on teaching your children about the right and wrong. To send your children to a traditional school rather than keep them home-schooled may enable them to learn academics. But what of his character?

In these times, more parents should be aware that home education has more benefits. Home school gets better results than the traditional set-up.

For one, home-schooled children foster stronger relationships with their parents and siblings. As the family is able to spend more time together, the bond between them goes stronger. Siblings grow closer and parents get more involved. The Bible emphasizes the responsibility of training to the head of the family. “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-8)

By spending more of their time with the children, parents are able to actively participate in molding their values and belief system. Their knowledge would be based on what is true to God. Not on what is true to society, wherein truth is often corrupted.

Homechooling enables kids to learn at their own pace, any time, any day and anywhere. There are no pressures from the outside world — pressures to follow the dictates of society; pressures to cope with the norms; pressures to belong and be accepted; pressures that tend to keep people from what matters most: living a God-centered life for His purpose. “For by Him [Christ] were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by Him, and for Him: And He is before all things, and by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:16-17)

Children who learn by home schooling are able to discern independently. By God’s grace, they are able to rise above the standards children their age are expected to become. By enabling them to think, feel and behave within God’s intent but above their own abilities, this in a way trains them to become future “teachers” themselves. “…Everyone who is fully trained will be like his teacher” (Luke 6:40b NW) This makes them instruments of God’s goodwill.

Home is the safest environment to a child. It is where the child starts to build the foundation of who he or she should become. The first lessons the child learns take place in the home, where love and nurturing is. That more than makes it an ideal environment for a child to keep on learning.
