LEARNING THE ADDRESS
Songs: "Thy Word Have I Hid in My Heart"; "The Bible"
Scripture: Psalm 119:167-176
Story: Jeanie and Jack had been memorizing Scripture verses every day. "I can remember the verse," said Jeanie, "but I never can remember where it is found." "Maybe it isn't important to know where the verse is found," Jack said.
Jack and Jean's dad was sitting there reading the Bible. "Let me ask you something," he said. "If you were lost in a big city, such as Chicago, and a policeman came to help you, and asked you where you lived, would ii help if you said, ‘I live in Chicago'?"
"No," said Jack, "I guess I would have to give him my address."
"What if you did not know your address?" asked Dad.
"It would make it pretty hard for the policeman to find our house," said Jeanie.
"That's right," said Dad. "That is why it is so important to memorize the reference when you memorize a Scripture verse. You need to know the address, that is, where you can find it. You can't just say, ‘It is in the Bible.'"
"Let's make a game of it," said Jeanie as they went back to their Scripture memorizing. "I'll tell you the verse, and you tell me the address."
"And then I'll tell you the address, and you tell me what the verse is," said Jack.
From that day on, when the twins memorized their Bible verses, they also learned the address.
Memory Verse: "Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth forever" (Ps. 119:160).
The Red Stop Light
Songs: "Trust and Obey"; "I Do Believe"
Scripture: Psalm 125
Story: Jack was almost late for his piano lesson. Mother was driving him there in the car. They came to the red light. Mother stopped. Jack looked up and down the street. "Why don't you go, Mother?" he asked. "There aren't any cars coming."
"No, Jack," said Mother. "The law says we must stop."
"But no one will see us. There are no cars coming, and I am in a hurry," said Jack. But Mother waited. Soon the light changed to amber. "Now you can go," said Jack. But Mother still waited.
"No," she said, "the light has not yet changed to green. We cannot break the law."
